What are you reading this summer? I’m going to run a poll when we get to the hop, but I thought you’d be interested in other summer books I remember well. For me, the school holidays were mainly a combination of ponies, pony books, swimming and the Beatles. So I remember lying in the garden reading Jill’s Gymkhana and the other Jill books by Ruby Ferguson. And the pony books by the Pullein Thompson girls, and the Silver Brumby books, and the Mustang books like Dark Fury by Joseph E Chipperfield together with his other wild west wildlife stories… More recently there has been that July weekend dedicated to reading the latest Harry Potter book, but I doubt if I’ll ever queue for a book to be released at midnight again!
I used to enjoy the Island of Adventure and the other Adventure books by Enid Blyton, and also school books like her Mallory Towers series. I found the Chalet School books quite late in my teens, largely because they were a little old-fashioned even when I was young, which means they are probably fine now! I think I inherited one from a cousin and that started me off looking for more. These schools always had lakes that someone went off and swam in, and of course sooner or later somebody got into trouble and our heroine saved the day! If you like books like that, I highly recommend The Dragonfly Pool and also, although it’s not a school book, A Year Without Autumn, both of which I reviewed last year.
You know, it’s really useful to go back and remember what I liked reading in those endless summer days when the bees were buzzing around and the occasional plane sped overhead. These days summer in the garden has constant traffic noise, aeroplanes taking off, and on Fridays the RAF fighter jets practise their manoeuvres – seemimgly heading away on full power (straight upwards) just above my house. When they aren’t doing that, the birds make such a racket with their singing! And in August we can hear the combine harvesters going day and night on the fields miles away. Such is the peace of the modern countryside.
