My Review
It’s over a year since I read the Perpetual Papers of the Pack of Pets, and I’ve been looking forward to this new book for some time. So I was surprised when I found myself all at sea to start with. Yes, I knew who the characters were, but somehow they didn’t seem quite as I remembered them. Consequently being bombarded with their poetry in the early stages was quite an ordeal.
As usual, though, the delightfulness and absurdity of the pets’ characters win the reader over, and, by taking each chapter on its own, they combine to make a delightful collection. I think it would be best read one adventure at a time, perhaps as a bedtime story.
Once again, the author has brought out the essence of two (or I should say three, since Zorg plays a much larger part in this second book) wonderful personalities, which every pet owner will immediately recognise. I felt that early on in the book the author may have tried too hard to bring her developing linguistic skill into play, but this self-consciousness soon disappeared and the later stories were relaxed, delightful, and had added pictorial interpretations that made me laugh out loud.
This is a sequel worthy of its brilliant predecessor and a book that will win new fans for Stanley and Katrina.
