You may have noticed that all the badges and counters for reading challenges have disappeared from the sidebar.  Less obviously, there’s a new page called “Challenges” in the menu at the top left.  As I say on that page, I’ve been decluttering, and part of that is to put these things in a page of their own.

I find it hard to declutter.  I like sidebars where people can see things that they might also be interested in.  I’ve done quite a few things by clicking on badges at the side of other people’s posts. I’m resisting taking away all my ‘follow me’ linked buttons for the same reason – I haven’t found a widget that lets me do all the ones I want to offer in one clean visual yet.

But what about reading this year?

2015 Reading Challenge

2015 Reading Challenge
Jemima has
read 0 books toward her goal of 60 books.

My aim is to read 60 books (that’s my Goodreads Challenge) and include among them:

  • 6 books for the Local Heroes Challenge
  • Target 2015 - 12 books
    Target 2015 – 6 books

6 books for the fiendishly difficult Oddity Odyssey Challenge devised by the Bookshelf Gargoyle.  This has to include books read across six categories – but he makes it easy for you to decide how many and which categories – and even whether to do fiction or non-fiction!  Do click the link to go and read more suggestions about this fascinating journey – apparently the last category can include a guinea pig who flies stunt planes…

1. Books with an odd TITLE

2. Books with an odd AUTHOR

3. Books with an odd SUBJECT MATTER

4. Books with an odd LANGUAGE ELEMENT

5. Books with an odd SETTING

6. Books with an odd CHARACTER

Those of you with a mathematical brain will work out that these two challenges leave me plenty of room for four more books a month in order to meet my Goodreads Challenge.  I’m aiming for those to be:

  • one by a BookElf
  • one as part of a book tour, or for my book club
  • one purely for pleasure, my favourite authors, like I did for the Tackle your TBR List last September
  • and one more, hopefully the next on my TBR list, which is terribly long and I even own about a hundred unread books now, on ereader and in paperback :O  Come to think of it, I should set myself a challenge to read at least one paperback among this lot each month!

the-mad-reviewer-reading-challenge-2015If I achieve my Goodreads target I will also achieve the title of Crazy Reviewer – once again bestowed by the Mad Reviewer as part of her Reading Challenge.  Sign ups are open till the end of July so you can sign up too – levels start at 12 (for the title Sane Reviewer).

What are you reading this year?

As a Book Reviewer, I’m definitely up for the challenge. Last year, since declaring myself one at the end of August/beginning of September I read 46 books. So far as you can see I’ve already reviewed 6. Book Review #2015-007 has already been written and will be posted later on today. This year I’m AIMING BIG = 125 BOOKS to be read/reviewed by the end of the year. Hope I’m able to win all of these books.

This reviewer is also a multi-genre author as well as Blogger. Check out my latest book, “Micro Fiction – An Anthology.”

That’s brilliant, Robin. I admire the reviewers who get through more than twice as many as me, but I’m still trying to spend most of my time writing. I don’t know how you fit it all in!

You’ve created quite a challenge for yourself, Jemima. I hope you’ve also scheduled time to write in there somewhere!

Oh, yes, Noelle, don’t worry about the writing – it’ll always take priority. Well, nearly always. At least I can read for relaxation!

You insure me, Jemima! I sorted out my current reading pile yesterday, but you make me think I might want to lay out a framework for the year, sign up for some challenges. Since my GR target is 150 (I knock off quite a few as audio books “read” while working out or doing chores) I can still leave myself enough space to read for fun.

And that doesn’t include re-readings of books I’ve read more than 5 times. That’s not really reading–it’s chocolate ice cream for my brain 😀

I confess I don’t get time for re-readings. And I often wonder whether librarians are allowed to read at work!

Whatever I’ll be reading I’ll probably be slow doing it. So far the book I started reading at the end of 2014 I’m still reading. At the rate I’m going I might hit 20 books this year. I hope I speed up some.

It’s the problem of being so busy, Lee. Either that or you need a shorter and funnier book 😉
