This is a season of celebrations, whether religious or associated with the clockwork of our universe, which brings us a solstice and seasons, and for the northern hemisphere, the shortest day and the promise of the earth’s renewal under our feet, bringing shoots and leaves and food in good time. The phrase ‘the clockwork of our universe’ sprang back into my mind after watching the video of that lifetime’s experience I had this year, going to Svalbard in the Arctic for the magic of a total solar eclipse. It is truly amazing how scientists, often seventeenth century ones, managed to calculate the paths of the planets and our track around the sun, and work out to the second when and where the next solar eclipse will occur. In 2016 the best place to be will be Bali in March; in 2017 it’s the USA in August.
So as we look back on what we achieved in 2015 and make resolutions and plans for 2016, I wish you a very happy solstice season, goodwill to all men and women of whatever persuasion and belief, and ask for peace and tolerance of each others’ little ways.
I’ll see you on the other side of Christmas 🙂
