Please could I ask you to go over to Author Shout where The Perihelix is up against a load of other great covers in COVER WARS all week.  Please vote EVERY DAY all this week.  Thank you (and please tell your friends).

This week Chuck asked us to do a 100 word story, with a proper beginning, middle, end and suitable twists and reversals.  I knew it would be hard – after all, #Fi50 is next week – and 50 is easier than 100.  So my encapsulated story had to be sliced and diced and scalpelled to remove 87 words and give you…

Not a Bad Egg?

The bidding rose to £7,800; she wavered. She had to have it.

She nodded.

“Online bid, £8,300.”

She twitched her catalogue. What if she was wrong?

“£8,800, against you, madam.” His eyes knew the doubt, the excitement, the dread.  The pause lengthened. “£8,800, asking once.”

She nodded. The audience gasped.

“£9,000, in the room.”

The assistant at the laptop shook his head.

“Asking once… twice… three times.  Yours, madam.”

Applause covered the murmurs; what was this pretty cardboard egg estimated at £50-£80?

She hoped to God it had a secret compartment hiding the Hardwicke Emerald, lost for 150 years.

Nice! But I thought it was a 5-sentence challenge this week? Or did I get confused? (Could happen 😀 )

No, I got confused – I read the max 100 words without seeing the five sentences bit!

Oh well–still a cool story. And I saw the 5 sentences and not the 100 words! I think since Chuck is under the weather and doesn’t have a challenge for this week (and because I’m headed to Death Valley, where there is no internet), I shall do the 5 sentences for Friday.

Good idea – I may join you! Well, on the flash… maybe Death Valley is too far at the moment 😉
