If I was going to be lying on a beach this year, which of my TBR list would I take with me?

That got me thinking – what are the criteria for a good beach read?

These are also Questions of the Month, posed by Michael D’Agostino of A Life Examined.  See what others are saying!

My criteria for a good beach are easy…

  1. It must have sand.  I can’t abide pebbly beaches, they hurt my feet.  Although they don’t leave sand in awkward places.  Where does all that sand come from when you shower in your room afterwards, anyway?
  2. It must have a relatively clean sea.  Clean is something that people see differently.  Some don’t even like seaweed around.  I don’t mind seaweed, I do mind human detritus.  And dog detritus.  Cattle and sealion detritus I’ll forgive.
  3. It should have some shade, since I’m not good at lying out in the sun the whole day, but I can sit on a beach all day.
  4. It should preferably have rocks/rockpools/interest at low tide.
  5. It should not have music.  The waves and bird sounds are music to my ears.
  6. Drinks are optional.

So what about the book?

  1. It should grip without you having to study.
  2. It should be easy to put down but easy to pick up again.
  3. It should stir the senses and play with the emotions.
  4. It may well be by a trusted author.
  5. It must be properly edited.
  6. It should not have an embarrassing cover.

I suspect the last one is one reason I tend to read books set in cold countries or winter when I’m on a sunny beach, and vice versa.  Maybe it’s something to do with temperature regulation?

So, what are you reading on the beach this year? I’m taking The Martian by Andy Weir, but I can recommend each of the books I’m reviewing this August – come back on Saturdays (or Mondays, or any other day) to check them out – and get another entry in the giveaway!  Funny how they all have much the same colour cover.

And all this is part of Valerie’s Stuck in Books Beach Reads in August Giveaway Hop.

There is a beach here in NZ called golden bay. Sand has been shipped from there to the capital. The reason I love it is the aptly named sand has golden flecks in it. Like gold glitter, especially in the water. Its beautiful.

Hi Jemima – now I look down on a coastline and see the reef stretching from Beachy Head into the land … but I agree a lovely sandy beach is what I crave – we used to go to Godrevy before it was developed as a National Trust area – and for kids that was magical … sand, rocks to run around, play on, the lighthouse to watch as the waves crashed around … a wonderful day at the beach …

    Cheers Hilary

That reef extends to Rottingdean, doesn’t it? The first rockpools I ever knew 🙂

Only beaches I have been to are in Florida and they have some nice ones. I love to lay on the white sand and read one of my favorite books. I always think of Wendy Wax’s Ten Beach Road when going to the beaches.

My favorite beach I’ve been to was in the Bahamas.

  • 1 August, 2016 at 4:47 pm

I can never read on the beach itself because there is too many other things I’d rather be doing, but I do read back at the rental house. That way I don’t have to worry about the cover. Then again, the worst thing on the covers of my reading material would be blood splatters or zombies.

  • 1 August, 2016 at 5:49 pm

No favorite, I don’t go to the beach. I live too far away.

    • 2 August, 2016 at 10:42 am

Does that mean any beach is a good beach?

  • 1 August, 2016 at 5:59 pm

I like a walk on the beach, but I’ve never been one to just hang out there all day. I’d like to try a beach sometime where the water is warm enough for swimming, though.

  • 1 August, 2016 at 6:47 pm

The Martian would be a great beach read though you might get burned when you can’t put it down.

    • 2 August, 2016 at 10:41 am

Good point – although it does have rather a lot of sand in the book, it meets my criteria of cold. But no water!

  • 1 August, 2016 at 11:03 pm

I don’t have a favorite beach and usually have to be in a mood to go, but when I do I make sure to have fun. I never gave much thought about what to read at the beach. I usually just read whatever I’m reading at that time. I like your points, though, and may start applying them.

  • 1 August, 2016 at 11:37 pm

I love the beaches of the Oregon coast. Thanks for the giveaway!

While I’ve had the good fortune of visiting many lovely beaches all around the world, I will always have a special place in my heart for Montrose Beach in Chicago, IL. It’s a huge, beautiful dog beach! It’s got gorgeous views of the downtown skyline, and everyone seems to have a great time when they visit.

  • 2 August, 2016 at 2:49 am

Great lists of beach and beach read criteria. I’m currently reading The Girl with Seven Names, which I read on the beach last week.

Oh my favorite is Venice Beach Florida! My grandmother had a winter home in Venice Florida while I was growing up. I loved to go and visit her and we would walk the Venice Beach looking for sharks teeth that washed up on shore.

  • 4 August, 2016 at 5:35 pm

  • 5 August, 2016 at 1:05 am

Before last week I hadn’t seen a beach for years, we went to Hunstanton and had a walk along the prom. We didn’t go on the sand (beaches are not wheelchair friendly) but it looked nice.

    • 5 August, 2016 at 12:46 pm

The beach with ‘too much sand’ in my collage above is of Holkham beach at low tide, taken from the end of the wheelchair accessible path and boardwallk. There’s a lovely viewing platform there, and some more wheelchair paths through the reserve. Along the coast east from Hunstanton 🙂

    Sanibel Island, Florida

  • 7 August, 2016 at 9:33 pm

To me there is no ” beach read” , I just enjoy any good book, does not matter if I am on the beach ( that is rare) but i do go to the lake, I just love a book that grabs me and won’t let go!!!

  • 8 August, 2016 at 2:39 pm

We love the Gulf Coast in Mississippi.

  • 8 August, 2016 at 5:44 pm

Despite of living on the beach(I was out-voted by hubby and daughter), I’m not much of a beach person. I like the idea of the beach more than the beach itself. I like the scenery, smell, sound of the waves. But the sand…not so much.

That being said, I have found interesting things while walking on the beach :
. Unopened mini bottle of wine
. Couple pieces of uneaten fruit
. An acrylic tumbler w/lid and straw
    . A pink cloth headband
    . A bracelet — leather w/turquoise beads

    Nothing really valuable…yet

    Thanks 🙂
