December’s Question

In terms of your writing career, where do you see yourself five years from now, and what’s your plan to get there?

Oh, heck.  2021.  That’s the biggie in terms of the Princelings series.  It will be over.  Done.  Finished.  Unless I manage to sell the movie rights.  Whether that means I go from an active independent author to a life of leisure is another matter.  Frankly I can’t imagine a life of leisure.  It comes of being a Saturday’s Child – the rhyme says Saturday’s child works hard for a living, and I always thought that sounded right to me.

willoughby-draft-coverSo how am I going to get there?  Well, I did a post a little while back with an outline for the publication plans.  Willoughby the Narrator next spring, the Princelings of the North next winter, the Chronicles of Marsh in 2018/19, and the final book in the series, Princelings Revolution in 2020.  Of course, I have to write the last two books yet, and Willoughby is still in the hands of my editor, but he’s got a pre-order page already, since I wanted to put him on my promotional banner.  So that’s the plan for Princelings.

The plan for anything else is up in the air at present.  There’s still a big question mark about Big Pete and the Swede, not only from the rewriting of the first part of the Perihelix, but various comments that call into question my whole approach to the Swede, and diversity issues, and all sorts of other things people think are important.  And I thought I was writing a story!  So at present, I don’t see the scifi being in my future in five years.  Whether it comes back into it will depend on how 2017 goes.  Whether I write anything else may be linked to that too.

There’s a cliffhanger for you!

Jemima, I sincerely hope your Willoughby series takes off and turn into a movie or television series. Sending you best wishes for your five year plans.

Thanks, Pat. I enjoy writing the stories, at any rate – and it keeps me out of trouble!

Good job planning, but I’m sorry to hear that the SF series may not make it. I do think you have a good story there, and would love to talk about the issues that are making you second-guess it.

I had ideas for a rewrite of the SF before the Princelings books took over again. I expect that I’ll get back to thinking about it in spring. Or sometime. At least I had ideas for flash fiction this week, which I haven’t for some time. Brain needs rest, sometimes, and it’s been a heck of a year, really.

I hope your series goes where you need it to go. I think you have accomplished a great deal. Very awesome. Persistence is a writer’s best friend.

You’re right, Juneta – so right! I tell people to put one word after the other. Then again, I’ve never been very good about changing what I’ve already written 😉
