Negative comments are the subject of this week’s Book Blogger Hop.  The BBH happens weekly, but I usually do the last Monday of the month.

book blogger hopHow do you handle negative comments left on your blog?

Maybe it’s a sign that I don’t have that many engaged readers, or that you lovely people normally say you disagree with me in a very agreeable way, but I don’t recall getting what I would consider negative comments on the blog.

I do recall getting the odd comment that shows the person disagrees with my post, or holds different values, but that’s fine by me.  It would be a shame if we all had the same views about everything.  Just because I don’t want people to disagree with me, doesn’t mean that I don’t mind a little healthy difference of opinion.

I do draw the line, though, and that’s where attacks on personal beliefs are concerned.  I rarely express them on the blog, but I think in today’s world we will end up becoming increasingly polarised.  And each person needs to stand up for what they think is right, and believe in the values they have.  Just don’t use my blog for what I consider to be reprehensible or offensive views.

I have a policy on comments (in the policies section): I reserve the right to edit or delete negative comments, or anything that appears to be too controversial for my blog.  And swearwords!

Hi Jemima – if I don’t agree then I don’t comment … and sometimes drop the blog – if that’s the way I feel it is going. I’ve had the odd comment, where I’ve countered their thoughts … but mostly it’s not something I have over at my place … and I’m sure you don’t here … if it’s awful – then I delete so it doesn’t appear. Cheers Hilary

I think that’s best, Hilary. I remember someone saying it’s a bit like going to a party – conversation can be lively and controversial, but not overstep the bounds of hospitality.

I’m with you, Jemima! Different points of view are definitely welcome on my blog, as long as they’re expressed in a courteous manner.

Like you, I don’t express my religious or political views on my blog. Well, at least not on my (mostly) YA blog. I do so, however, on my other blog, the one dedicated to classics, literary fiction, and nonfiction. I think it’s important for me to do this, but again, only on that second blog.

I’m glad you haven’t had that many negative comments posted here. I agree with what other BBH participants have stated — that the bookish blogging community is, for the most part, friendly and courteous.

Your policy on swear words is also like mine, although I haven’t stated it officially on my blog. I think I need to add this to my blog policies page. I HATE swear words!! The worst one for me is “the F bomb”. I have in the past visited blogs where I saw this word. One visit, and that was IT. I have not gone back anymore!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! Also, thanks for visiting my blog and leaving such a nice comment on my own BBH post!! Have a blessed day!! <3 🙂

Ah. My own comment has disappeared, probably into spam.

Thanks for commenting, Maria. Great to meet some more lovely people!

Like you, I’ve never had a nasty comment (some spam, but that’s a different story, and no worries about deleting or not) on my blog. And like you, I don’t do politics or religion on it, either, though I suppose some of my fiction could inspire people to argue. Frankly, I’d love it if enough people were reading it to do so!

I guess if I did get a disrespectful or profane comment, I would delete. A polite attempt to engage me in discussion/debate would get an equally polite response, until it all went to pieces, because it seems like internet debates NEVER stay polite.

Yeah, the only time I’ve got into trouble was when I expressed views in posts I didn’t know the others, at least by reputation, or in Goodreads where we know that Moderators sometimes get trolled.

I’m in control of my blog (I think).

I have sworn on my blog once. It was actually on a really old pre-parenthood video I shared, ha ha, but I put up a warning before the video. However, I would never comment with swear words on other book blogs and if someone used more than mild ones in my comment section, I would probably delete them too. I have a pretty rowdy rock and roll viewer base and they all manage to be polite, so no one has an excuse. I love them. 🙂
