book-blogger-hopBookshelves – or other things as well?  That’s the question for this week’s Book Blogger Hop, which you can find at the Coffee Addicted writer.  It’s a godsend for anyone hunting for inspiration for a blog post, any weekend throughout the year!

Do your bookshelves have books ONLY or do you also have bookish items on the shelves?

My Bookshelves

As often with me, it’s a yes and no.

I have four main bookshelves.  Two tall ones are stuffed with books, although as I don’t have enough space for pictures and knickknacks, some of them end up there, too.  The low one with cupboards underneath contains my travel and nature reference books (field guides etc). In the cupboard parts there are maps, so I suppose those are bookish things rather than books. There’s something about having a whole load of old Lonely Planet guides on your shelf, most of which have been well used, but some were bought when planning my last big trip… and they are unlikely to get used, I’m afraid.

The last one, the messy one, has most of the books I own that are on my TBR; together with those I’ve read and would be happy to give away as a prize.  There are also DVDs I haven’t watched or would like to give to someone who’d like them.  And also useful carrier bags with books in them… In fact, these shelves hold things I haven’t got around to putting away in a permanent place as well.

I hope you like an insight into my messy household!

What do you have on your bookshelves?  Cameras?  Old engine parts?  Partially constructed spaceships?

I only have one bookshelf and it has a mix of books, Pop figures and toys on it. I got a little artsy when decorating one day.

Thanks, Elizabeth – yes, I try. Having a place to put things to be put away is the secret!

Most of my bookshelves have only books, or maybe the odd bit of detritus in front of the books. On top of the bookcases, though, are many things. The one in the dining room has 2 wire sculptures made in art class by my boys, along with a bunch of very powerful magnets and a lot of rocks–obsidian, and quartz crystals from Morocco, and a petrified shark tooth. The only one with few books is the one by the piano, which has music, our photo albums (I guess both of those are books, in a way), National Geographics, and more odds and ends of a musical or sentimental nature.

All of my bookshelves have far too much dust. Much as I love my books, I am aware that they aren’t great for my health. Maybe if I were a better housekeeper, but I’m not.

I’m sure dust is good for books 🙂 Love the idea of your wire sculptures on top. Where else to put them?

I don’t think it’s messy at all. It looks very organized. Have a great week!

I LOVE your shelves! They are so unique! Well, everyone has their own “look” to their bookshelves, don’t they? Your shelves show what’s most important to you, and that’s GREAT!!

How nice that you have so many travel guides! You’re SO lucky to have been able to travel! I’ve done some traveling myself, but I’ll bet not as much as you seem to have done.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting on my own BBH post!! Hope you’re having a nice day!! <3 🙂

Thanks, Maria. I think travel guides are great to browse through on cold winter evenings – the idea of the trip is sometimes even better than the trip itself!
