IWSGOur Insecure Writers Support Group theme of the day is:

Did you ever say “I quit”? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing?

Before I get around to answering the question… a big THANK YOU to our co-hosts

and also a big THANK YOU to our new administrators, Nick Wilford and Pat Hat!

The ‘I Quit’ question

We’re talking about writing here.  Throwing the book at the wall, the keyboard on the floor, stomping out and yelling at the wife/husband/kids/cat/guinea pigs, then making a cuppa and returning to the writing process – it’s all part of the game.

We’ve all done that sometime.  Or maybe you haven’t been writing long enough?

I have shelved projects for a while, as regular readers will know.  But they’re only on the shelf, waiting for some stamina to improve or inspiration to strike. I believe in letting my brain work on these things while I give that part a rest and do other things.

I can see a time coming when I stop writing as much as I do now.  The Princelings series will be finished, and hopefully the Viridian one too.  I would like to get a collection of the Sir Woebegone stories together for publication.  I have a few projects in the ‘ideas’ pile to do with real guinea pigs.  Maybe those will be my swan song.  I may even take a sabbatical from writing if I find myself falling out of love with it.

But quit?

Not really my thing.  Gradual winding down, perhaps.

I mean, I may be in receipt of my pension, but I don’t think I’ve retired yet… just on my sixth career!

What about you?  Have you quit writing?  Have you come back again?  What about blogging?

Hi Jemima – it doesn’t sound like you’ll quit – lots of ideas ‘swilling’ around the ‘old’ brain – which keeps you young, creative and interested … just enjoy it all – which I’m sure you do .. cheers Hilary

I think I’m like you. I can’t see calling it quits necessarily, though sabbaticals may be in my future as well! I’d like one right now actually, break up the monotony of this edit. 😉

    Hi Jemima,
I definitely do whine down. Sometimes it is necessary. Sometimes other things, like people, take a priority over my writing and I don’t write as I normally do. As for quitting, well, I’ll continue until I cross over into eternity.
All the best on your new projects.

“I don’t think I’ve retired yet… just on my sixth career!” Love that! Taking breaks are fine – they open up time for new story ideas to take hold 🙂

I’ve never thought about quitting, Jemima, but there have been 2-4 weeks when I didn’t write. But the little gray cells were working. I can’t see you stopping, but slowing down is okay. Plus you play golf! More time for golf!

I’ve taken breaks from writing, but have yet to quit even for a short while. It’s just too fun despite it’s ups and downs.

One of the many things I love about writing is that we never have to retire from it if we don’t want to. 🙂

Yes, I like your way of thinking. Like you, I’m retired from one profession but now enjoying another one, writing. Quiting is not in my vocabulary. So I’ll keep writing and see where it leads. Have a great day.

I’ll take breaks, usually because we are traveling. That’s going to increase next year when the spouse retires. But at this point, I don’t see me ever completely quitting with the writing. So many ideas bubbling around, and so many flash fiction pieces that kind of cry out to become longer stories or even novels. If I didn’t write them out, what would all those ideas do inside of me? 🙂
