Memories of Lace continues my anecdotes about Pete and the Swede (Lars) that didn’t make it into the Quest for Orichalcum, which is out next Tuesday.

As this is for Crispina Kemp’s lovely Crimson’s Creative Challenge, based on one of her published pictures (#3 this week) it is supposed to be creative writing in no more than 150 words. I got there this week!

Memories of Lace

Kappa Venturi might have the smells of fumeroles and upwelling geysers, but it also had flowers, beautiful meadows, and wildlife.

Pete wandered through the meadow on the way back to the spaceport. It had been a brief stop, a working month on their long journey, just to break the tedium. Lars was buying stores with the credits they’d earned. Pete wanted to check the spacecraft over before they started the next leg. And this meadow…

Six different grasses he’d counted so far, flowers of all colours and shapes. This beautiful lace one that reminded him of the wild carrots of his home planet. And the girls, who made lace from fine thread they spun during the winter, and manipulated into amazingly delicate decorations for their best dresses during the cold season. Evie had worn lace at his sister’s wedding.

He had been very careful helping her to take it off.

And what a wonderful memory that was for him. We all know that certain scents can transport us, but we can hang our memories on sights as well, just some small element within a whole, perhaps

That Pete! He has certainly not failed to build up memories worth looking back on 😀
