Last time I went down the TBR Hole my list ended at 914 (plus 7 in currently reading). I’m pruning things from my TBR list I am never going to read, realistically. I am posting monthly for a bit, then whenever I want to take some older books off my TBR shelf.

Down The TBR Hole is a meme created by Lost in a Story, but Lia has permitted Jody from Jody’s Bookish Haven to adopt it since she is no longer blogging; the only thing changing is you can now link up to your post. This meme will revolve around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’ll never read and sorting through it all to know what’s on there. This is a laid-back meme, so post every week or month, whatever works for you.

TBR Hole

Yes, 914… and yet it’s now saying 920 again, which includes the books I’ve added that come out in January and February. There are an awful lot of time travel books involving libraries at present, but they seem to be worth reading.

So, starting point: Goodreads TBR list 920 again, plus six in currently reading, only one of which is newly published. Well it’s an improvement on last month.

We’ve now reached books I added in January 14, although scrolling down to that, I seem to wonder why I’d left a couple of titles in… I think I skipped them from the previous year when I did this exercise. I aim to reject ten on each journey down the TBR hole. Sometimes I’m even rejecting books I have a copy to read now.

This month’s journey Down the TBR Hole 25.4

And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. I kept this last month, and for some reason decided I should have rejected it. It’s off my TBR list now, anyway. REJECT (1)

Hunt for the Horseman (also titled The Mystery of the Horseman) by Gita V Reddy. Lots of good reviews, one of which mentions getting it in a Librarything giveaway. Oops, I may have it on my kindle because of that too. KEEP (and move up to read in 26)

Root Bound (Emma and the Elementals #1) by Tanya Karen Gough. One I should have read when I was into MG legends, perhaps. REJECT (2)

The Bifrost Bridge by James Hadley Clark. I know why this was on my list. It’s an MG adventure with Norse mythology entwined in it, and great reviews from people I used to hang out with. But I don’t have a copy, and I’m unlikely to get one. REJECT (3)

No More Heroes by Nicholas Chapman. Interesting premise, with forgotten heroes from other books washing up together and having to fight for their lives… good reviews, but I’m not going to get a copy to read, so.. REJECT (4)

Dory’s Avengers by Alison Jack. Sounds like the Handmaidens Tale meets Braveheart. REJECT (5)

Beauty and the Werewolf (Five Hundred Kingdoms #6) by Mercedes Lackey. I seem to have been on a serious fantasy kick in early 2014. I would reject this too, but I’ve never read any Mercedes Lackey, and I think I’m missing something. This might not be the best one to try, but it’s been on my list a long time… KEEP

The Northern Sunrise by Rob J Hayes. A standalone connected with a series, and with an intriguing blurb. Fantasy, steampunk and a touch of airshippery – and thieves. I suspect I’ll enjoy it – if I can find a copy. Note: It’s now available as the first of two It Takes A Thief novels, this one is To Catch a Sunrise. KEEP (and retitle)

Odin’s Promise by Sandy Brehl. An MG tale of German occupation of Norway in WW2. Renee (Mother Daughter Book Reviews) rated it extremely highly. Maybe I should… KEEP

The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig. Doesn’t sound like something I’d go for, but maybe I was aiming to expand my horizons a little, since I know nothing of Montana. Rebecca rated it highly, but I’m afraid it’s a REJECT for me (6)

The Labyrinth Society: The Versailles Vendetta, by Angie Kelly. This was one I thought I’d be keeping, mainly because it’s time travel, and teenagers and disappearing cultural items. But, now I’ve got the whole of the St Mary’s series to get through. It’s listed as age 9-12, and I don’t even think it would suit my great-nieces. REJECT (7)

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. I don’t read this sort of book any more. Except when I do, like Yertle the Turtle. So I’m keeping this, because it does sound like a hoot. KEEP

Sufferstone (Dolvia Saga #1) by Stella Atrium. In June 2014 I won a copy for the third in the Dolvia Saga in a giveaway, so I put the first and second (Heartstone) on my TBR as I enjoyed it a lot. But in all that time I’ve never got around to them. I’ve checked, and my copy of Strikestone must have gone in the book recycling during the move, so these are also going. Sorry, Stella. REJECT (8 and 9)

Maskerade (Discworld #18) by Terry Pratchett. You never know when I’m going to pick up another Discworld novel… or which. KEEP.

Matt Archer: Redemption (Matt Archer #5) by Kendra C Highly. This is a great series, but I’ve stopped reading it. There are still some of the titles floating around my TBR list, though not this one any more. REJECT (10)

Summary

So I had to review 15 to get rid of ten. That brings me to July 14 additions for next time.

The TBR now stands at 910 (plus six). I’ve read 1204 now, and I read about seven since last month. I ought to keep track of that way of getting the TBR down, too.

Good decision on Hoot—Hiaasen is a very funny writer. And if you have unread Pratchett out there… I envy you (though I’m finding some I don’t remember, though I’ve marked them as read, so that’s a lot like reading for the first time). You know how I feel about Ivan Doig, but I’ll forgive you for bumping something that far from your usual reading 🙂
