This is my second Challenge update, and I’ve read another book towards my Local Heroes target of 6 – the Uncommon Reader. Well, some of the action took place in my county, and that’s all that counts!

I’ve now read 9 books towards my Goodreads target (although one of them isn’t released yet, and another is one book in an anthology), reviewed 5 for my Mad Reviewer Challenge, and included 1 for the Oddity Odyssey!
This month I’ve read (but not reviewed yet)
- Reversal, by Jennifer Ellis (published on Monday but review next month)
- The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett (review next month)
- Death by Trombone by Rebecca Douglass (an ARC, and no publication date set yet, but brilliant!)
- The Emperor’s Edge Book 1 by Lindsay Buroker (tip: list books in an Anthology separately on Goodreads or you won’t get the reading credit for each one as you read it!)
and I’ve reviewed The Secret of the Sword of Excalibur last week and the review of Stellarcadia will be out on Saturday.
It’s a hard call to pick my favourite out of these. Uncommon Reader was light, funny and uplifting, Death by trombone ingenious and a brilliant crime adventure, and Emperor’s Edge is a brilliant and mind-twisting steampunk fantasy. And as for Reversal! I loved it – definitely weird! But they’re my favourites so far this year, I think. Mind you, I’ve forgotten what I read in January by now.
I seem to be tending away from kids books at the moment – although I am writing this sandwiched between two kidlit reviews. Maybe I’m testing my actual audience – or just reading things I like.

You are doing great! I still haven’t found anything set in my city (besides the local history books). I’m going to have to start reading books set in SF and hope they wander south a few yards. That would get us there!
Well, most of The Uncommon Reader was set in London, or Balmoral, or Windsor, but she had a visit to Norwich and someone went to the Creative Writing course at our university, so I counted it!
