A bit late, since summer’s here, but I had a useful email to remind me that there is a simple way of fending off the hackers of one’s blog.  Spring clean.

Simply making sure all the add-ons you have are used, and up to date, as well as your themes and software, helps to keep hackers at bay.  Apparently Microsoft fell foul of this and let hackers into a wordpress-based blog they run by having too many old software elements from third parties that they didn’t use and hadn’t updated.

It didn’t take long to update my plug-ins and get rid of things I don’t use any more.  And the Jetpack upgrade worked, so maybe they’ve finally sorted out why it wouldn’t load the one file that kept missing out and making the whole thing stop working.  Fingers crossed.

I’m waiting for the big day when Chrome actually allows Java to run so there are things I won’t miss seeing.

Since I use Blogger and stick to their features I am assuming this isn’t an issue?

It should be mainly self-hosted sites that need their own spring cleaning. But Blogger is a nightmare for letting spam comments through and counting them as real views. If you ever look at the innards of your blogger blog and see some odd websites listed – especially if they have nasty words in them like zombie or devil or hacker – do not click on them. Blogger lets them camp on your system which is why they attract views from other spambots. They reckon its easier to ignore them. It’s their server, so fine. But its why many blogspot blogs, especially with lots of graphics, load slowly.
