Oo-er!  The Question of the Month for November is:

“When was your first kiss?”

Now, I can’t remember whether it was Mick B, David A or a boy I liked at Kindergarten, but I have lots of clear recollections about David A, which I’m not going to tell you about at all!

So I thought I’d ask some of my characters the question…. first from the Viridian series:

Pedro Garcia (Big Pete): Harvest time on Corsair.  I was fifteen, Chloe was sixteen, although only because her birthday was in June and mine in October.  She’d been sidling up to me and giggling for years, this year she kept her distance and chatted up the older lads.  I got a bit confused by this, because I was ready to suggest dating, but hadn’t plucked up the nerve.  I was hanging about in the alleyway outside the barn, wondering where she’d got to, when she came out of the barn, brushing hay out of her dress and hair, and saw me looking.  She laughed, grabbed me, and before I knew it, I was in the barn too, kissing her.  It was very wet, as I remember.  I don’t remember much else, though!

Lars Nilsson (The Swede): Oh, I was kissing all the girls by the time I was twelve.  I can’t remember who was the first.

Dolores: I think it was probably Peter (not Big Pete).  This was back on my home planet, of course, before the Federation took over.  Our school had a number of buildings, and the favourite place to hide from teachers was behind the ice-shed.  A group of us used to hang out there, we were eight or nine, and felt very grown-up, since we moved to the big school when we were ten.  I remember Peter and Jalal most, I expect it was one of them.  I sometimes wonder what happened to them.

Maggie: You mean, not from a relative? Well, it was probably one of the Governor’s sons.  That’s not as grand as it sounds.  My mother worked in the kitchens, so I was a nothing, and they were after anything they could get their hands on.  All the young girls were chaperoned as a result, but sometimes, if you were running an errand, one of them would spot you and make life awkward.  They teased as well.  I remember one cornering me in the alcove of the western tower, and making me cry when he wouldn’t let me go without giving him a kiss.  I gave him a peck on the cheek and he said, no, properly, and did it on the lips with tongue and everything.  Not nice for a serving girl, which is what I was then.  Made me determined to get to college and show him I was his equal, though.  Sad, really, given what happened after the Imperium took the planet.

…and now from the Princelings series:

Fred of Castle Marsh: Kissing?  I never really thought about it until I met Kira.

George of Castle Marsh: Um…. (goes bright red and shuffles off into his workroom)

Lord Mariusz of Hattan: Well, these days women all fall at my feet, naturally.  There was a time, though, when I had to be my most urbane and debonair to get them to look at me.  Maybe when I was about seven, after they started to school us in same-sex groups.  Best really, since we were taught about the business, and girls were taught whatever they were taught.  We got together on vacations, though, and we played a lot of hide and seek games, you know what I mean?  Anyway, I kissed Anya first.  She was something.

Willoughby the Narrator: Wow, I haven’t kissed anyone for ages.  Too many girls chasing me – could lead to complications.  I must see whether Fred allows his main assistants to date.  I expect he does.  My first?  Oh, it was back home.  I haven’t even thought of home for years, let alone the people there.  Mine was Lena.  She was nice, but giggly.  I was always hoping Portia would be my girlfriend, but I left before we got to that stage.

Kira of Castle Marsh: Properly?  Fred, of course.  A princess was not encouraged to give anyone else more than a peck on the cheek, if they were family, or equivalent royalty, and then him kissing your hand would be more acceptable.  I think Fred was in the same position, really, despite not realising he was destined to become king.  He’s practised a lot since then, though!

Mine was a boy called Peter Hennis at school! It couldn’t have been very good as he never did it again! 😁

Great way to handle this one! I wouldn’t answer it even if I could remember for sure. Maybe I should ask some of my characters about that!

What an interesting question, Jemima. I remember mine – when I was 13, but don’t remember the name of the boy!
