fi50 CountdownCountdown is this month’s prompt in the Fiction in Fifty Words meme.  Rebecca Douglass organises this, so join in any time you like.  The year’s prompts are listed, together with the minimal instructions, on her page here.

This is the one post this month without even a tenuous link to #30DaysWild.  I tried, I really tried.  Is spaceflight in itself a while thing?  Gazing at the stars would certainly be a Random Act of Wildness.  If only we had some stars to gaze at.  This June seems to have been continuous rain since Wednesday 5th (and it poured the day before).  I am still hoping to identify the Summer Triangle—made by Vega, Deneb and Altair—this month, although I did spot Jupiter low on the horizon before the clouds came in.  It was shining absolutely brilliantly.

And now for my fiction in fifty words!

Countdown

‘One minute.’

Her trembling fingers touched each switch on her console. It was second nature by now.

‘Thirty seconds…’

‘A-OK,’ she murmured.

‘5-4-3-2-1…Lift off!’

Her furious fingers recorded every detail of the launch, and tracked where their rocket fell, forty yards from their backyard.

Today is Midsummer Day.  Not to be confused with the Solstice which was a couple of days ago, on June 21st. Read more here.
