Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse has been sitting on my shelf for some time, waiting for it to be picked for the Great Middle Grade Reads monthly read. It came second some time ago, which is when I got it. And it gives me another step on my Mount TBR reading challenge!

Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse

by Chris Riddell (inc. illustrations)

Meet Ada Goth. She lives in Ghastly-Gorm Hall with her father, Lord Goth, lots of servants and at least half a dozen ghosts, but she hasn’t got any friends to explore her enormous, creepy house with.

Then, one night, everything changes when Ada meets a ghostly mouse called Ishmael. Together they set out to solve the mystery of the strange happenings at Ghastly-Gorm Hall, and get a lot more than they bargained for… [goodreads]

My Review

This was a thoroughly enjoyable middle grade book, with fabulous illustrations by the author. He is noted for illustrating many other books, and decided to give writing his own a go. Now there’s a whole Goth Girl series.

I confess I have difficulty remembering anything about it until I reread the blurb, and even then, I can only remember a stately home romp with lots of caricature characters, and a clever plot that kept me interested. But I enjoyed it, it was satisfying, and I think a lot of kids (especially British ones) will love it. I’m planning to give it to my great-niece to tide her over for a day or three in summer.

Recommended. Especially given how much I have not been enjoying my other reads recently.

I like it. Just a nice fun read, right? Not earth-shaking (thus the lack of memory of anything much) but enjoyable while it lasts.
