Nine months of the year have gone already. If 2020 just disappeared in a blur, despite seeming never-ending, I don’t know what 2021 has done. It seems to have taken a long time to get here, yet the idea that it’s three months till the year end seems ridiculous. I have, however read a lot of books!

SpaceTime Reading Challenge – nine months in

Firstly how are you doing on your #spacetimereads? I have made a little progress since last quarter, and have just two to go to reach my target.

I’ve been having a little trouble working out whether some of the books I’m reading should be counted as time travel. I included A Swiftly Tilting Planet (reviewed Saturday coming), but discounted Cauldron’s Bubble, which definitely does twisty things with time, but not as we’d know it, Jim. Was it meant to be time travel?

I also read two scifi ‘romances’ set in the Drath universe, one of which I enjoyed. The world-building is terrific, and the aliens… brilliant. I could find others in this setting, not in the romance group, if I look. But there are so many books to read…

Let me know how you’re doing, or I will carry out my threat to visit you 🙂

Three other Reading Challenges

It seems that limiting myself to the three other challenges has worked; I’m getting through my TBR, and I’ve nearly hit my overall Goodreads target as well! I’m just on to 50 out of 52. I knew if I didn’t put down 60 I’d make it easily. This has happened before!

Alphabet Soup: three letters to go, V, X and Z. I have a book on my actual shelf, for V, just want to have a settled week to devote to it. X and Z are trickier. I’m using a series beginning with Z, and I’m not sure I’ve found an X yet. I have one earmarked from my TBR, but I don’t seem to have a copy…

Non-Fiction Adventure: I hit this in June, which is a bit silly, but I have one on my list for this autumn which will go towards next year’s target. I really pight to get more of those on my shelf onto the ‘read’ pile, though. Useful for the TBR mountain, though.

Mount TBR: I’ve now reached halfway up the third mountain, which is unheard of for the nine months point in the year! Only six to go, and the V and Z are both eligible. Get a couple more of the spacetime reads from the TBR list, and then I’m nearly at the top of Mount Vancouver with 36 books off my TBR!

So, for once, it looks as if I won’t be rushing to finish six books between Christmas and New Year this year. I bet I’ll be reading anyway.

Either a dedicated hour or two of an afternoon/evening (I don’t watch tv), or while sitting next to the guinea pigs in the garden, in case of predators. 🙂

You really are a prodigious reader Jemima. I think I read a new Bernard Cornwell after Christmas somehow but have been stuck on one book ever since.. I used to read a little every night in bed before settling down but these days it seems I get to bed less and less.. I’d ask you to do my reading but it sounds like you’ve enough on your plate.. I think the Government have knocked at least 6 months from the calendar via timed travel to get us three quarters the way through the year already. Christmas gift buying has started in earnest.

Well, I did stick to shorter stories and more middle grade ones after I threw a bluey over too nasty ‘thrillers ‘ earlier in the year. 🙂
I have collected a few Christmas presents at craft exhibitions too, but I wouldn’t say ‘in earnest’.

If I didn’t count audio books, I wonder if I’d make 50? Not much SF—I can’t remember how many of Becky Chambers’ great stories were this year, but I think she’s all I did with SF, plus a re-read of a couple of Spider Robinson’s Callahan’s Bar books.

I had realized how seldom these days I sit down in the middle of the day to read. Audio books get me through workouts and the odd bit of housework, but most of my real reading is done in bed. Sometimes that means a long read, sometimes rather less 🙂

audio books count, though. I actually sit down and read in the living room, to get away from the computer for a while. Even if I’m reading on kindle 🙂 I try to use all the comfy seats in the house at least once a day lol (that excludes the ones in the summerhouse, natch)
