The Captain Who Broke the Rules is the second novella in the Ptolemy Lane series. It follows the Body in the Zero-Gee Brothel. It’s a quick read, but just right for when I want something light and easy after getting bogged down in a non-fiction book with dodgy facts.

The Captain Who Broke the Rules (Ptolemy Lane #2)
by Cameron Cooper
Ptolemy Jovan Lane meets his next adventure.
Lane’s personal cargo is jettisoned while travelling back to Georgina’s Town after the death of a friend. Lane confronts Captain Sandor and learns the ship is being pursued by slavers. Captain Sandor’s response to the disaster is anything but typical. Nor is she above roping in Lane to help…
The Captain Who Broke The Rules is the second Ptolemy Lane space opera science fiction story by award-winning SF author Cameron Cooper. [goodreads]
My Review
Like the Body in the Zero-Gee Brothel, the Captain Who Broke the Rules is a fast paced, intricately plotted tale starring a sort of law enforcer called Ptolemy Lane. He’s an engaging, resourceful chap, who’s very good at asking questions.
In this incident, the question of why the captain has jettisoned all the passengers’ luggage turns out to be a very good reason, even if she’s trying to keep it quiet. That’s not all she’s trying to keep quiet. But she does allow (I wouldn’t say ropes in, myself, as in the blurb) Lane to help her crew, and herself, when things get out of hand.
I really enjoy the detail the author puts into his space scenery, whether planetside or on a ship. There’s an economy of description which still brings the sights and smells vividly to the reader’s senses. There’s some backstory here that would do well in a complete novel. And given these are short stories, I wondered why I didn’t have the same criticism of them I had of the Captain Duke ones last autumn. It’s probably because they are only linked by the protagonist, they do not appear to be a serial. I would like to read more Ptolemy Lane, though. I could settle down with a book of his adventures for much longer than one evening…
However quick a read this book I’d I place my trust in you that there us enough to grip the full Interest of the reader. You’ve never let me down before.. I love a good plot and a suitable Hero..HUGS.
I couldn’t figure out from the title of your blog post why you would be reading this book – THEN I saw it was based in space and knew. This series sound like a hoot and you know I like science fiction!
I’ve got the Zero-Gee brothel on my TBR list—sounds like this would be fun as well.
