After quite a gap since I reviewed any middle grade books, two come along in quick succession – and there’s more to come! Thanks to Mother Daughter Book Reviews, I’m pleased to be part of the blog tour for Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew, the first adventure of the Wunderkind family, by Melissa Perry Moraja. Don’t miss the giveaway at the end of the post!
About the Book
Title: Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew: The Super Secret | Author: Melissa Perry Moraja | Publication Date: May 5, 2014 | Publisher: Melissa Productions | Pages: 154 | Recommended Ages: 6+ (read-aloud)
Summary: Up until a few days ago, nothing extraordinary had ever happened in ten-year old Josh Wunderkind’s life – except eating a whole pot of pasta by himself. But that all changed after a mammoth-sized bird hit him smack on the face with a glob of neon green bird poop, triggering his superhuman Wunderkind ability and leaving him with the responsibility of caring for a baby bird he named Max. Now Josh was just like his older brother and twin sister Madison-super extraordinary! But what Josh didn’t realize was that being superhuman wasn’t all fun and games.
And things only got more complex in Josh’s life when his two siblings and a couple of neighbourhood friends persuade him to lead a super crime-solving, neighbourhood news team—the Gumshoe News Crew. But not before they agree on the Super Secret and complete Gumshoe Boot Camp.
Find out what the Super Secret is. Will the Gumshoe News Crew complete boot camp? Or will Josh let his team down?

My Review
This is a fast-paced early chapter book with a great gang of kids and a pseudo-parrot (you’ll have to read it to find out what that means!). Josh, his brother Jake and sister Madison have superpowers – but Josh’s are rather more dramatically revealed (and more powerful) than theirs. There’s plenty of goo involved, that’s all I’ll reveal.
They join forces with some friends to right some wrongs, a venture which involves maps, ingenuity, commonsense, technology and duct tape. It also involves some Robin Hood-like conclusions.
Altogether it was a fun read with lovely touches, great and believable characters, and plenty of jelly beans. Should be plenty more fun on the way with the Gumshoe News Crew!
Bonus points for the super illustrations!
I received an ARC for review as part of this tour.

Sounds like a great read for my youngest child!
Oh, I wanted to let you know that we got the card with the cover of Princelings of the East on it. It looks amazing! Thanks again, Jemima! :O)
You’re very welcome, LuAnn 🙂
Thank you so much for your amazing review of the fifth Wunderkind Family children’s chapter book! Wishing you a wonderful weekend with lots of smiles! Melissa
Thanks, Melissa!
This book should be perfect for a trio of girls who are daughters of friends. I call them the Little Ladies and they are huge readers.
I’m sure they’d enjoy it, Noelle
I think every story should make room for duct tape, don’t you? lol So glad you enjoyed the book. Thanks for taking part in the Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew Blog Tour, Jemima.
The duct tape held everything together 😀
I gather you get it in lots of different colours and patterns. I know we do black, white, silver and yellow… not sure of any others!
