The Worst That Could Happen is the prompt for this month’s Fiction in Fifty words, the brainchild of Bruce Gargoyle and organised by Rebecca Douglass. Nip over here to the sign-up page if you’d like to join in. All you have to do is pen a fifty word story on the prompt of the month, put it somewhere online we can read it, and paste a link on Rebecca’s own monthly Fi50 post.
This month’s prompt was probably the quickest story I’ve ever written. I thought of the prompt, saw my characters in their sticky situation in Curved Space to Corsair, and it wrote itself. It even came in bang on 50 words, but I tweaked it a bit for better flow. If you like the characters, well, I promise their books will be out in 2018. It’s a new year’s resolution already!
The worst that could happen
Pete checked the screens. “We’re on the other side of the galaxy, probably lost.”
Lars took control. “Okay—checklist says: what’s the worst that could happen?”
“We run out of food.” Maggie contributed.
“We run out of air.” Pete shrugged.
“We withhold sex,” Dolores said, straightfaced.
The men looked aghast.
