The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse – you must have seen the excerpts on social media. This book really hit the headlines. I felt such a connection to the messages online, I bought the hardcover copy. I’ve been reading it one or two pages at a time, really thinking about the words, and admiring the pictures.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

by Charlie Mackesy

The Boy the Mole the Fox and the Horse

A book of hope for uncertain times.

Enter the world of Charlie’s four unlikely friends, discover their story and their most important life lessons.

The conversations of the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse have been shared thousands of times online, recreated in school art classes, hung on hospital walls and turned into tattoos. In Charlie’s first book, you will find his most-loved illustrations and some new ones too. [goodreads]

My Review

This crept into my consciousness from outside, and in February I decided to buy it. Since then I’ve been turning a few pages each day, savouring the wisdom that oozes from the interactions of the unlikely friends. In case you missed it, the boy meets the mole, and they start an adventure, freeing the fox from a snare, and meeting the horse…. The horse is full of wisdom, as is the way with horses. The words provide insights that have really rocked me. Why did I not learn these things fifty years ago? For example:

The hardest person to forgive is yourself.

The Boy, the Mole, The Fox, and the Horse – Charlie Mackesy

Mackesy’s book came out in 2019, but it was a stroke of genius or serendipity that it arrived in time for lockdown. The journeys we are all on can feel a lot easier if we consider the words of the horse, and keep taking one step forward.

Beautifully produced on what feels like cartridge paper–as if the painting was freshly done just for me. A cloth spine and board covers, and a gold ribbon to keep my place. I feel like I should give it as a gift to someone I love. But then, how would I look it up when I needed it?

A book to cherish.

Hi Jemima – this caught my eye and I bought it for my SIL for her birthday – she was enchanted … the illustrations are quite delightful, while the story is there for everyone to enjoy and appreciate … great book to recommend to us all. Enjoy – Hilary
